About
The ENT UK Research Showcase Meeting 2025 will take place on Friday 5 September 2025 at Hallam Conference Centre, 44 Hallam Street, London W1W 6JJ.
The Event
The 2025 ENT UK Foundation Research, Audit and Training Prizes aim to acknowledge and celebrate the academic work and achievements of the combined ENT surgical workforce, junior and senior. This includes ENT trainees and surgeons at all grades encompassing SFO, non-standard training pathway/SAS & LED grades, early consultant years, overseas members, as well as those following formal academic career paths (i.e. ACFs, ACLs, OOPR trainees).
The BOARS awards - The British Otorhinolaryngology & Allied Sciences Research Society (BOARS) was formed as a merger of the Otorhinolaryngological Research Society founded in 1979 and the British Society for Academic Otorhinolaryngology founded in 1991. BOARS aims to provide a forum for the best current research in ENT, Hearing & Balance and other related disciplines in the UK, bringing together discovery scientists and clinical researchers of all disciplines, levels and grades. Continuing the remit of the BSAO, the new society will also champion education and training in research for ENT trainees of all levels and in all settings as well as provide a forum for academic trainees to get support and mentoring.
These awards aim to acknowledge formal academic research activities (either pre-clinical or clinical, single or multi-centre), reporting major advancements of theoretical/clinical knowledge and forming the basis of major research grant applications culminating in postgraduate degree projects (MPhil, PhD, MD etc) and/or other major publications.
ENT UK Foundation Research and Training Prizes in Memory of Rowena Ryan were set up in 2015 on her 10th death anniversary to celebrate trainee-led Audit, Research and Training initiatives within the London and SE England region. In 2021, the awards extended nationally and internationally under the umbrella of the ENT UK Foundation.
Rowena Ryan as a young consultant ENT surgeon at Northwick Park London was a trainees’ champion and strong advocate for improving training and clinical practice standards. Through regional (TPD) and national roles (SAC), she provided support and mentorship for basic and higher surgical trainees, and oversaw ENT UK’s national clinical audit and practice guideline development committee, balancing a busy work and home life schedule.
Prematurely in her early 40's, Rowena developed a short illness and died from pancreatic cancer, leaving behind her husband and two young children. In her name we celebrate ENT training and acknowledge the work, sacrifices and achievements of trainees and trainers alike.
