Interested in recruiting an MTI doctor to your Trust?

The primary purpose of the MTI is to contribute to improving the quality of healthcare in developing countries. The MTI allows doctors from developing countries to come and work in the UK for between one and two years in recognised training (or equivalent) posts with appropriate supervision and teaching, acquire useful and suitable skills and knowledge and then return to their countries of origin to practice in their chosen fields.

MTI trainees can be placed in recognised training slots which are vacant for a number of reasons which includes trainees out of programme (e.g. on research attachments) or spare training capacity. These international doctors receive the same quality of training as UK trainees. They will be able to increase and widen their clinical and technical skills in a structured and supervised training programme.

The MTI is not intended to compete with the UK medical training capacity, but instead capitalises on spare training capacity in areas that are undersubscribed within the UK or uses supernumerary Trust and/or HEE training posts.

The recent restructuring of training posts may mean that Trusts have lost or will lose training places and may wish to retain these posts through local funding. This will allow overseas trainees to benefit from the experience of working in the NHS for a period of 1-2 years. Some countries, notably Sri Lanka have a requirement for their senior trainees (after the local MD exam which is supported by ENT UK external examiner) to have a year of training experience abroad and currently there is a back log of such trainees needing placements abroad.
