Investigating the Socioeconomic Impact of Spasmodic Dysphonia

Background

Spasmodic dysphonia is an underdiagnosed voice disorder where a person’s vocal cords have regular spasms that affect their voice. An initial pilot study in 2021 displayed that it may have a negative social and economic impact on patients. This study, carried out by Sadie Khwaja, aims to interview 20 patients to understand further the impact spasmodic dysphonia has on their social and economic well-being and their quality of life in general.

Impact of ENT UK Foundation funding

Funding from the Foundation enabled the project to gain sponsorship, assistance with ethics application, and inviting participants.

Current Status

Undergoing REC ethics review.

Drafts of invitation letters to participants and interview schedules have been made.

Expect to run interviews with 20 participants in April-May and start analysis in June.
