New recommendations for upper airway endoscopy and aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs)

The clinical guidelines for practising safe endoscopy have been revised to reflect the reduced probability of exposure to high SARS-CoV-2 viral loads, stemming from the diminished incidence of Covid infection currently existing throughout the UK. The document includes a series of options for PPE, according to the perceived risk of viral exposure and the local situation. We now understand that the main risk of transmission is from airborne aerosols and that room ventilation is much more important than previously thought.

We have therefore attempted to reach a balance that facilitates clinical activity while maintaining a good level of safety for patients and clinical staff alike. However, we must continue to remain vigilant and cannot afford to be complacent until we are very clear of the ever-present risk of a third wave.

You can read the revised version of the document here.
