Good news from the Royal Berkshire Hospital, and another success for the ENT UK Foundation, as the team at Berkshire successfully undertook the UK’s first transoral parathyroid surgery on 29 November with the help of Foundation support. This innovative procedure, Transoral Endoscopic Parathyroidectomy via Vestibular Approach, or TOEPVA, has gained in popularity around the world in recent years. Acting as proctor during this ground-breaking procedure was experienced TOEPVA surgeon Dr Jon Russell, Director of Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Multi-Disciplinary Thyroid Tumor Center.
The ENT UK Foundation is proud to have contributed towards this important moment of international collaboration and help embed transoral parathyroid surgery into the broader landscape of UK ENT and head and neck surgery.
Mr Ram Moorthy, lead surgeon and honorary consultant ENT surgeon at Royal Berkshire Hospital writes: “my fellow ENT consultant, Mr Sid Nagala, and the rest of the team at Royal Berkshire Hospital are very grateful for the support of the ENT UK Foundation, Royal Berkshire Hospital Charities, the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Colledge Family Memorial Fellowship Fund and our commercial sponsors Karl Stortz Endoscopy Ltd. and Inomed Neurocare Ltd.
“Transoral parathyroid surgery is the first truly scarless technique and we hope to start undertaking transoral thyroid surgery in the near future. None of this would have been possible without the generous support received.”
