The Post Operative Tonsillectomy (POPT) Study: A multicentre prospective cohort study

Award: ENT UK Foundation Grant 2021

Title: The Post Operative Tonsillectomy (POPT) Study: A multicentre prospective cohort study

Project Lead: Elliot Heward and John Rocke

Grant Amount: £500

Status: Final Report

Background

Tonsillectomy is the most common operation undertaken in the field of ENT Surgery. The understanding of patients’ post operative recovery following a tonsillectomy is limited.

We conducted a multi-centre prospective cohort study at 12 hospitals assessing patients post-operatively in an attempt to understand the pattern of pain and bleeding in more detail. We aimed to gain information that will contribute to the standardisation of consenting processes and post-operative advice, including analgesics in tonsillectomy. In total 374 patients were recruited.

Impact of ENT UK Foundation funding

The funding paid for recruitment material such as envelopes and stamps for patients to return their completed diaries. It also paid for statistical analysis of the data generated from this study.

Current Status

Completed. Submitted for presentation.

This study was delivered solely by ENT trainees which is a fantastic achievement and has increased their exposure to NIHR portfolio research.
